Benicia's Top Spellers to Compete in Solano County Spelling Bee

Benicia will send four to competition in Susuin City.

Last year when Sukanya Roy of Wilkes-Barre, PA won, the word was cymotrichous.  20 years earlier when Joanne Lagatta of Madison, WI won, the word was antipyretic.  Roy and Lagatta are past winners of the National Spelling Bee held each year in Washington, D.C. the week after Memorial Day.

For some Benicia students the road to the nation’s capitol goes through Susuin City where the county’s top spellers will be crowned at the Solano County Elementary Spelling Bee.  The contest will be held Wednesday, March 28 at the Joseph Nelson Community Center and will begin at 6 p.m.

Fifth grader Emily Jewik from , fifth grader Austin Barlow from J School, fourth grader Isabelle Fernandez, from  and sixth grader Natalie Eulano, from will be representing Benicia.

The top two spellers from Solano County will compete in the state championship in San Joaquin on April 12.

According to dictionary.com, cymotrichous means to have wavy hair and antipyretic, if used as an adjective means to prevent or alleviate a fever and if used as a noun it is a remedy or drug.
