Family Planning Products Get Locked Up at Raley's

Safe sex, family planning and personal gels are protected from theft at Southampton store.

Condoms, personal lubricants and pregnancy tests are all under lock and key at after the store security personnel noticed the items were being stolen in large numbers and store workers were finding the items on shelves throughout the store.

“All the kids were coming in after school,” said Raley's Assistant Director Rob Burkhart.  “They would use the bathrooms in the back and walk right by the stuff” (the family planning items).

According to Burkhart, the kids are from but he doesn’t think they are really using the items. “We find the packages in the bathrooms or on shelves around the store,” he said.

All the family planning items are in a locked plexi-glass case.  Anyone who wants to purchase them will have to ask a pharmacist or courtesy clerk to unlock the case.

“Pregnancy tests were the first thing we noted were getting stolen,” said Burkhart but the pattern has changed and now it is “primarily condoms and personal gels.”

He said the Raley’s security department brought in the locking display cases and it has solved the theft problem.  He didn’t say whether locking the items away had affected sales.
