Gallery 621 Opening is a Who's Who of Benicia Artists

The opening reception was packed with Benicia artist all-stars.

Benicia's newest place to view art, opened on Friday to a full crowd of more than 100 people. The reception began at 5:00 and by 5:30, had sold one of her landscape paintings. She was told that the first artist to make a sale at a new gallery is supposed to make dinner for all the artists. Wilder Snider was more than happy to start planning it. 

Wilder Snider said of the reception's abundant turnout, “I am very moved. It just seems like a big hit for Benicia and it's a whole lot of variety of people. If you look at some of their faces next to the paintings, often the flavor of the painting, you can see it reflected in the person's face.”

Gallery owner and artist was elated by the huge turnout. The new gallery is home to 12 local contemporary artists with wide ranging styles. Painting styles include plein air, landscapes, abstract and whimsical paintings. Photography, wood sculpture, ceramic and bronze sculpture round out the assortment.

“I think it's overwhelming with all the people showing up with very little advertising,” expressed , a participating abstract artist and co-owner of . “In fact, it's been really positive and heartwarming. Everybody supports the idea of a gallery on First Street. It's an artist community so lets hope we thrive and more galleries open. Hopefully those entrepenuers will be willing to take the risk. ”

“All the people have smiles on their faces and are saying wonderful things about the gallery and the work,” said metal artist , who's work is featured in the gallery. “I am very happy.”

Painter was pleased with the turnout at the reception. “Maybe because they've had some wine first, they are not afraid to look at my smutty paintings,” Turner said while gesturing to his painting of a nude inter-species couple- she is human and he is an alien.

“Tonight is a who's who of Benicia artists,” said Jim Spillane, a supporter and volunteer in the art community. “Everybody is here tonight, artists that have been here for years and years are in attendance.” Local artists Bill Harsh, Manuel Neri and were among the local artists that came to show their support. “I think it's been an exciting night,” said Spillane.
