High School Students Choosing Classes for 2012-2013 School Year

Some choices are based on college needs others on passion for the subject.

At Benicia High School choices are being made, names taken down and forms turned in as students prepare to choose classes they hope to take the next year. For freshmen and sophomores, their choices do not weigh as heavily as do the choices the juniors have to make. Are they going to take classes based on their passions? Or are they are basing their choices on where they hope to go to College?

Kimberlee King (16) is planning on taking her fourth year of Film Production, second year of Advance Dance, AP Gov/Econ, and Lit 4. She is not yet sure on which other classes she wishes to take, but says, “I am choosing them based on my passion and the fact that I am planning on enjoying my senior year.”

Beau Darwood (17) says he wants to take AP Studio Art and maybe Psychology, “because I believe they can help me with the job I hope on having.”

Annahid Samiljan (17) is planning on taking five AP classes and Physical Education, saying, “No, don’t be silly, these are all for college. Though instead of taking Physics, I will take AP Chemistry for a higher GPA.”

Asti Stults (16) is choosing her classes because of her passions and college choices. Choosing AP Studio Art and Psychology because of her love for the subjects and Physics, Pre-Calculus, AP Government/Economics, and AP Lit  for her college goals.

Daniel Klapstein (16) says, “My class choices will be dictated by my goals for college.”

Nick McClure (16) is planning on retaking Academic Decathlon, while taking AP Biology, and AP Calc. McClue reasoned by saying, “I choose them because I will do acceptable, I enjoy them, and they are all fun classes.”

Joseph Jacobs Jr. (16) is planning on taking Animation 4, creative writing, and maybe Psychology, saying, “I enjoy art and understanding the human condition, plus I want to pursue a career in making movies.”

True Swayne (16) wants to take more Animation and Fine Arts, remarking, “I just want to have fun.”

The Elective Fair on February 23, 2012, gave students a chance to talk to teachers and fellow students regarding various elective choices before making final decisions on next year’s classes.
