In Tune with Song Stylist Laura Dorais

Singer features selections from The Great American Songbook among others at upcoming appearance at Sailor Jack's.

California native Laura Dorais, who has lived in Benicia for the last 14 years, began singing professionally at 44. “I was inspired by the jazz scene in Portland, Ore. I could walk to three or four clubs in a night and hear wonderful players performing beautiful standards of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. In fact, Portland, Ore., is where I first got my jazzy feet wet," she said.

“So, I took a year of vocal training to access my diaphragm and create a stronger more controlled voice," said Dorais.  "In addition, I had four months of speech therapy to correct a lisp, which made me shy during all of my younger adult years. And, I also made regular visits to a rehearsal pianist for timing training. I play the piano, too.”

Dorais, who has a grown daughter, noted that her other pastimes are gardening and Starbucking with close friends. But, her true passion is singing. “I love pleasing the audience, myself and my musicians with the iridescent tunes of The Great American Songbook and more modern jazz-influenced pop such as Madeline Peryoux’ version of the Leonard Cohen classic, “Dance Me to the End of Love.”
