New Live Traffic Cameras Are NOT for Enforcement

Cameras at First and Military are detectors, not enforcers.

Scofflaws and red light runners might think twice about breaking the law, but the new traffic cameras at the intersection of Military and First Street are not meant to enforce traffic regulations and photograph law breakers.

“It really is just a sensor to see if anything is sitting at the intersection,” said Melissa Morton, Benicia’s Interim Director of Public Works.

The new camera sensors are needed because the city is removing the loop detectors at the intersection.  Loop detectors are magnetic sensors that are installed under the pavement.  They relay information to traffic lights that cars are waiting for  the signal phase to change.

The new sensors will detect bicyclists and newer cars made with carbon fiber and aluminum block engines.

“You can’t even read a license plate or recognize a face with the new sensors,"  said Morton.   She went on to describe how a lot of motorcyclists and bicyclists add magnets to their vehicles so so they are sure the loop detectors know they are there.

The sensors are being installed as part of the new Project.
