Police Dog Retires After Eight Years of Service

Every dog has his (retirement) day.

After eight years of faithful service, Benicia Police Services canine Jazz will retire and live out his life with partner and handler officer Jake Heinemeyer. Jazz, a 10-year-old Belgian Malinois, will retire on Sept. 1.

Jazz lives with Heinemeyer, who has been his handler for the past three years.

Police dogs typically serve 5-7 years on the force before retiring. Upon retirement the department usually allows handling officers to purchase their canine partners. The cost for the officer’s best friend: $1. The purchase will include Jazz’s personal items, such as his leash, bowl and brush.

Despite his years of service, Jazz will not be entitled to medical care from the department. The bill of sale includes a waiver of liability that is signed by the purchasing officer. In it, Heinemeyer agrees to continue to care for Jazz in the manner to which he is accustomed.

Yes, they should have medical coverage. after all they risk their lives for us. I remember when a friend had a domestic problem and was crying. All of a sudden we heard a whine from the Police Car. It was Jazz, and his whole body langauge was telling her that he understood and it would be OK.
