Why Solano County Board of Education Trustee Galvan Resigned

John Galvan explains his decision to leave the Solano County Board of Education.

After a life dedicated to education, John Galvan says he's ready for a break.

The Solano County Board of Education Trustee announced plans to resign from his post representing Benicia and other areas, effective later this month.

When asked why he decided to resign, Galvan said he wants to retire and start checking items off his bucket list.

Here is an emailed response from Galvan about his decision:

My decision to step down now is rather simple.  I have dedicated my adult life to education in one form or the other.  I was a classroom teacher, a coach, a secondary school administrator and for the last 13 years continued on as a member of the Solano County Board of Education.

In the past year my health has been slipping a bit and I realized that my bucket list is nearly full and it was about time to start doing something about it before I was unable to do so.  It's time to retire and move on.

Why now?  Why not wait until November?  I thought that if I should retire now this would give the Board an opportunity to interview interested applicants and appoint a qualified candidate to fill the vacancy.  The advantage to the successful applicant would be it would give the person seven to eight meetings to see if the position was as advertised, (all about the students in the county), and worthy of running for election in November.

In any case, the voting public would have an opportunity to affirm the Board appointment or elect someone else.

I hope this clears up any questions you had.  My last meeting will be Wednesday, February 13, 2013.  I will miss my colleagues and the fine work they do.
