Mare Island Toastmasters invites the public to an open house on Thursday, April 25 at 7:30pm. The meeting includes a panel discussion about programs for the unhoused. We are highlighting the amazing work of three organizations. The meeting will be held online on Zoom.

The three people on the panel work with the unhoused and they really know what will work and what will not.&nbsp;
<ul><li>The panelists are: Mecca Cannariato, Clinical Director of Housing Services San Francisco, and&nbsp;</li><li>Annmarie Bustamante, Coordinator of Street Outreach DAO - serving Oakland, and&nbsp;</li><li>Jackie Jones, President of Vallejo Together. The panelists are pictured.&nbsp;</li></ul>
The panel will talk about providing real solutions for the unhoused. Two of the solutions are Vallejo Together's Mobile Basic Needs program and the Community Action Academy.
This panel discussion about the unhoused is a timely issue because the number of people who are unhoused has increased.&nbsp;&nbsp;On Bipartisan <a href="https://policy.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Policy.org</a>, Francis Torres wrote, "According to the most recent national count, 653,104 people were experiencing homelessness across the United States on a single night in January 2023—an increase of 70,642 people (12%) from 2022. At the time of the count, one out of every 500 people in the U.S. was unhoused. The numbers from the 2023 Point-in-Time (PIT) count represent the single largest one-year increase in homelessness since the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development began collecting data in 2007. "
Come and find out about people who are making a difference in this field. In addition to the panel discussion, we will have some other fun activities with members and the audience. Mare Island Toastmasters club is a non-profit 501(c) organization. Toastmasters helps its members achieve more and become better speakers and leaders.

The scene is a fishing lodge in rural Georgia often visited by “Froggy” LeSueur, a British demolition expert who occasionally runs training sessions at a nearby army base. This time “Froggy” has brought along a friend, a pathologically shy young man named Charlie who is overcome with fear at the thought of making conversation with strangers. So “Froggy,” before departing, tells all assembled that Charlie is from an exotic foreign country and speaks no English. Once alone the fun really begins, as Charlie overhears more than he should—the evil plans of a sinister, two-faced minister and his redneck associate; the fact that the minister’s pretty fiancée is pregnant; and many other damaging revelations made with the thought that Charlie doesn’t understand a word being said. That he does fuels nonstop hilarity!

“Our tales are spun, but for the most part, we don’t spin them, they spin us,” wrote the philosopher, Daniel Dennett. In this daylong retreat, we’ll examine ways the sense of self is an effect, rather than a cause. We’ll explore the self’s inherent defensiveness and how our self-view compounds the pain. This egoic energy becomes invested in a whole range of views and stabilizes our sense of self. But, in the end, all of this clinging is futile. The dharma invites us to an open space, releases our fixations and makes a home in spaciousness. The day will include sitting and walking meditation, guided practice, talks, and time for dialogue. All are welcome. Matthew Brensilver, Ph.D., serves on the Spirit Rock Board of Directors, teaches retreats at Spirit Rock, Insight Retreat Center and many other Buddhist centers.&nbsp; Matthew is co-author of two books, and continues to be interested in the unfolding dialogue between Buddhism and science.

Mother’s Day comes early this weekend with the ultimate local shopping experience at the free <a href="https://www.eventbrite.com/e/moms-day-boutique-free-in-hilton-concord-tickets-399235432927?aff=oddtdtcreator" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Mom’s Day Boutique</a> this Sunday, April 28, in the elegant Hilton Concord Golden Gate Ballroom.

The Boutique is indoors in the ballroom at the Hilton Concord Hotel, 1970 Diamond Blvd., just two blocks off Interstate 680 at Willow Pass Rd. 
 
Clothing for women, teens and kids, makeup, jewelry, purses, books, candles, soaps, honey, jams and jellies, fashion accessories, home goods, bath and body, baked goods and so much more will be available. 
 
The Hilton Concord has a wine, cocktail, coffee and tea bar open in the Boutique for shoppers to relax during and after they shop. 
 
There's a Mom’s Day Red Carpet for free photos. There are also free balloon animals and Mother’s Day art for kids. 
 
The first 200 mothers through the door will receive a Mom’s Day Gift Bag. Each attendee gets a free raffle ticket for numerous prizes donated by vendors plus a special Mother’s Day package from Visit Concord. 







Donation of food to the Monument Crisis Center will earn the donor another raffle ticket for each can donated.

Experience a unique combination of history and socialization with our event, First Fridays At The Museum - Featuring The Real Thang. Brought to you live from the Museum of History Benicia - The Real Thang Band, formerly known as the DrD Band, is a six-piece band that plays Funk, R&amp;B, Rock, and basically anything that will get you going. The Real Thang is based out of the San Francisco Bay Area and is comprised of six seasoned musicians.
The Real Thang Band covers songs by Chaka Kahn and Rufas, Aretha Franklin, Heart, Santana, Toto, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Sly &amp; the Family Stone, Steely Dan, and many others. But the bottom line, is they want you to dance and have a great time!
