Benicia Public Library

“Home sweet home” can change in shape, size and number of residents as seniors’ housing needs shift.
“Housing Options for Seniors” will be the topic of discussion for the Carquinez Village Speaker Series at 10:30 am Thursday, April 18, 2024, at the Benicia Public Library, 150 East L St. in Benicia.
A panel presentation will be given by four Carquinez Village members who have recently been on the hunt for alternatives in housing as they age. The panel will be led by Janice Magner, Director of Membership for Carquinez Village.
Topics that the panel will discuss include in-home care, independent/assisted living/memory care, board and care, and public housing. 
The program is free and open to the public. A question and answer session will follow the presentation. Decaffeinated coffee and doughnuts will be available
The mission of the Carquinez Village is to help Benicia and Vallejo seniors to stay in their homes and to enrich their lives through connecting, supporting, and inspiring them.

THE FOREIGNER by Larry Shue - The scene is a fishing lodge in rural Georgia often visited by “Froggy” LeSueur, a British demolition expert who occasionally runs training sessions at a nearby army base. This time “Froggy” has brought along a friend, a pathologically shy young man named Charlie who is overcome with fear at the thought of making conversation with strangers. So “Froggy,” before departing, tells all assembled that Charlie is from an exotic foreign country and speaks no English. Once alone the fun really begins, as Charlie overhears more than he should—the evil plans of a sinister, two-faced minister and his redneck associate; the fact that the minister’s pretty fiancée is pregnant; and many other damaging revelations made with the thought that Charlie doesn’t understand a word being said. That he does fuels nonstop hilarity!

To conclude our season, we feature one of the very greatest operas of the 20th century - Porgy and Bess. Gershwin's undoubted classical masterpiece of 1935 has had productions throughout the world, and we are pleased to present the legendary Hollywood composer and arranger Russell Garcia who wrote this for Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong in 1959.Russell Garcia (1916 - 2015) was an American composer and arranger who wrote a wide variety of music for screen, stage and broadcast. He was a composer/ arranger at NBC Studios, Universal Studios, and MGM Studios where he composed and conducted an original score for such films as The Time Machine, Atlantis, and The Lost Continent. In 1957 he arranged and conducted the adaption of Porgy and Bess for Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald.

Experience a unique combination of history and socialization with our event, First Fridays At The Museum - Featuring The Real Thang. Brought to you live from the Museum of History Benicia - The Real Thang Band, formerly known as the DrD Band, is a six-piece band that plays Funk, R&amp;B, Rock, and basically anything that will get you going. The Real Thang is based out of the San Francisco Bay Area and is comprised of six seasoned musicians.
The Real Thang Band covers songs by Chaka Kahn and Rufas, Aretha Franklin, Heart, Santana, Toto, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Sly &amp; the Family Stone, Steely Dan, and many others. But the bottom line, is they want you to dance and have a great time!
Our event takes place in the heart of Benicia, California, at the iconic Museum of History Benicia. Known for its historical significance and architectural beauty, the Stone Hall forms the perfect backdrop for our event, enhancing the overall experience.
