Solano County Library card holders can now access over 90 magazines, cover to cover, and free on their computer or mobile device. The lineup of magazines includes Rolling Stone, Forbes, and Newsweek as well as special interest magazines such as Gluten Free Living, Road and Track and Inked. Zinio, a proprietary database subscribed to by the eight-branch library system was awarded Best New Database in 2012 by Library Journal.
Two account setups and log-ins are required: the first enables checkout of the magazine, the second enables a personal library of checked out magazines for streaming or offline reading. “Once registered and logged in, the interface is pretty easy. The best thing is that no return is necessary,” said Lynne Williams, the Library’s deputy director for public services.

Magazines can be viewed on a computer, smart phone, and tablet and there is no limit to the number that can be checked out. Users can even choose to have a magazine “delivered” when the latest issue is published. Readers can either navigate through the magazine by clicking links in the table of contents or browsing the magazine one page at a time. “From Family Handyman to Shape, from Kiplinger’s to Marie Claire, there’s something for everyone with this database,” said Williams.
