Celebrate Earth Day Locally

Get inspired to go green at Thursday's Earth Day event at Veteran's Hall from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

Friday is Earth Day, the international day of awareness and appreciation for our planet's natural environment. The holiday was originally founded in 1970 by U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin. It went international in 1990, when 141 nations organized Earth Day events. 

Earth Day now is celebrated in more than 175 countries around the world. This year's theme,  A Billion Acts of Green, is meant to inspire people to do a single green act such as getting a home energy audit, changing to energy-saving light bulbs or not using pesticides and toxic cleaning products.

Benician's have the perfect opportunity to Think Globally and Act Locally at an hosted at the  on Thursday. The event will showcase local resources for conserving energy and water, green living, eco-education, recycling, organic gardening, green-building and energy-efficiency retrofits.

Groups such as the  and Ennovationz, which provides ways to compare your energy use to other households then creates a plan to save energy, will be there.

Community organizations such as Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Benicia Community Gardens, 's Interact Program and the Historic Preservation Review Commission also will be present. Allied Waste and are among local businesses participating. California Native Plant Society and Master Gardners will inspire you to start your summer garden.

Learn about Benicia High's Studies Abroad for Global Education program. SAGE gives teens the opportunity to volunteer and study abroad to gain a greater understanding of their world and become responsible global citizens.

The event will include kid activities such as masquerade face painting and recycle art projects. The kids won't want to miss the E-waste recycling truck. Bring unwanted electronics to pitch into it: televisions, computers and monitors, dead batteries and old cell phones.
