Great Escape: A Walk Around the Lake

Treat yourself to a nature walk in Benicia's back yard.

Imagine a leisurely stroll around a lake surrounded by wild grass, wildflowers and wildlife. The peaceful surroundings offer solace and quiet.  You can actually hear yourself think, or better yet, think of nothing at all. The only noise you hear is songbirds and birds of prey. You spot mallards, white herons, jack rabbits, and the occasional coyote on your stroll.

So where is this paradise? It's Lake Herman Park just over the hill from Community Park. The best part is you don't have to drive to Lake Herman Road to get there. Simply take the trail on the right side of  Community Park's Phenix Dog Park or the path behind the farthest ball field. Turn on the path at Soroptimist Grove and the trail leads straight to Lake Herman.

Once you lose sight of the ball field, you'd never know you were in Benicia's back yard. Be it sunny or drizzly, it's a beautiful walk to take with a friend while the kids are at school. The walk to the end of the trail and back takes about an hour.

With all the recent rain, now is the perfect time to go because everything is green. Wear walking shoes with good tread and be prepared for mud if it's been raining. If it's sunny, wear a hat with a brim and always carry a water bottle. If you are a bird watcher bring binoculars and it never hurts to have a camera. For dramatic photos, go right after a storm.
