The Whole Enchihuahua

The little dogs were popular a few years ago. Now they are showing up at shelters.

During the month of May, the San Francisco SPCA is offering  free spay and neuter for Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes.

Californians have grown tired of toy dogs! Besieged by cutesy images depicting Chihuahuas as timid, trembling creatures with a penchant for pink designer wardrobes and vacuous owners - think Paris Hilton, Beverly Hills Chihuahua and the annoying girl from Legally Blonde - Chihuahuas became the pet of choice on the West Coast. What could be better than a toy dog you can stuff in a bag, dress up like Barbie, accessorize with your outfit and has poop the size of a peanut?

Pop culture consumers desperate for a doggy like Paris' flocked to wrestle a pup from the shelves of their local designer doggy store, but apparently the petite pooches are now being taken to the shelter.

The last time I visited the Solano County Animal Shelter there were more Chihuahuas than Pit Bulls.  So now, Puppy Tales, a new group in the area,  has four new Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes. They have large and medium sized dogs that need fostering or adoption too.

If you  want to help these dogs and others needing homes please come down to Pet Food Express this Saturday from 12:00 until 3:00 and see the many small medium and large dogs awaiting adoption.
