A Poem For Moms: Giving of Herself

Here is the second poem honoring mothers.

This is the second poem in the Patch Mother's Day Poem series.  Jeff Burkhart says, "It is an interesting study in the nurture and bonding between a child and mother brought about by the act of giving as manifested in nursing."

Giving of Herself by Irma Harris

He drinks the fluid that sustains him with sheer ecstasy
Without it, he would perish
But yet, the ritual during the ceremony
Seems as important as the reason for it
He strokes the skin as he has known it all his life
Yet, their time together has been brief
She is much older than he
She relishes in being able to give of herself
She hopes that in him she will live forever
The one before him has long forgotten the need for the ceremony
But, she will never forget him
It was the first time she had ever felt the need
With him, it was the first time she learned to fill the desire
She caresses him as he takes and takes from her
He will never remember the dance they shared
As he, quenched his desire for life with her body
She gives of herself without question
All that she asks is to be loved and remembered
To be remembered as the mother she was to them
And the moment they shared as they nursed from her breast
