“MILESTONES” by Jeremy Cantor

They told me that my vision would get worse.
(Perhaps I should have told them, “Yes, I see.”)

They told me that I would not hear as well.
(Perhaps I should have told them, “So I’ve heard.”)

They told me time would rush by in a blur.
(Perhaps I should have asked them, “Come again?”)

They told me I would miss my children too.
(Perhaps they knew I wouldn’t think of that.)

They never told me (they must have assumed
I’d know) something I noticed yesterday

That I would look at you and find you

Now that you’ve read the poem, here is a commentary by Benicia Patch Poetry Maestro Jeff Burkhart:

Today’s Friday Poem is “MILESTONES”, and was written by Jeremy Cantor. The setup is a series of musings about the vagaries of time; a series of reactions to statements made as time marches on. The retorts are not verbalized; they are simply the humorous reactions that live in the mind. These are our hero’s thoughts on the matter. The last three lines sum up the truth of the piece. The truest thing in any person’s life is constancy. Well founded faith in the one you love.

I wish you all a belated, and very happy, Valentine’s Day.

Until next week,

Jeff Burkhart
