The Friday Poem: The Sounds of Fatherhood

Each Friday Benicia Patch will publish an original poem. If you would like to submit your own poem please send it to benicia@patch.com.

Here is Benicia Patch poetry maestro Jeff Burkhart on today's poem:

As a personal aside Bobby Richardson is a great baseball name. What Giants fan doesn't remember or has at least has heard of the Yankee's second baseman catching Willie McCovey's line drive to rob the Giants of a chance to tie in the 9th inning of game 7 of the 1962 World Series? I actually attended his summer camp in Sumter, South Carolina when I was 7 in 1959.

As a father myself, this poem evokes memories of the constant cycle of change that relationships with your children present both parent and child. A series of impromptu tests of patience and grace as the relationship matures and is redefined through the years. A wish to all Fathers and their kids.....  enjoy and care for each other while you can.

The Sounds of Fatherhood by Bobby Richardson

I remember telling her I was on a sea food diet
while showing the chewed food in my mouth
and she would laugh so much
Now she looks at me with total disgust

I remember when I would burp the alphabets
And in her eyes, I was a King!!!
Now she looks at me as though
I am the most repulsive thing

I remember when I would spit a good ten feet out
to break the other mans' record
And she would cheer so excitedly
But lately, she's the main person that heckles me

I guess my little girl is growing up
and it's making me blue
How should a Forty Eight year old dad deal with this?
I guess, finally

I should grow up too!!!
