Fire Burning Near Lake Herman Road Nearly Contained

Fire fighters are not speculating about the cause of a large grass fire near the Benicia Industrial Park.

Fire fighters on the ground and in the air are battling a 4-alarm grass fire in the open space area between Lake Herman Road and West Channel Road.  The fire was 80 percent  contained at 7 p.m. according to KC Smith, acting Division Chief in the Benicia Fire Department.  The fire had scorched 142 acres as of 7 p.m.

Crews responded to reports of  the fire near the Benicia Industrial Park around 2:20 p.m.

The fire spread quickly, fueled by 20 mph winds and dry conditions.  Fire fighters from nine agencies including Suisun Fire District, Contra Costa County, CalFire and Marin and Napa Counties responded to assist Benicia fire fighters in containing the blaze.

The Valero Benicia Refinery, Vallejo, Fairfield and Vacaville fire fighters also sent personell and equipment to help fight the fire.

There were two air tankers and a helicopter from CalFire dropping water and fire retardent on the flames.

The fire burned near the city water treatment plant on Reservoir Road but the wind and fire fighters prevented the flames from reaching the building.

According to Smith the cause of the fire is still under investigation and he was unwilling to speculate about the cause.
