The show’s star, Chef Robert Irvine, working with a $10,000 budget does a complete makeover of the restaurant from the dining room décor to the menu and personnel.  The whole change is accomplished in two days and if past episodes are any indication, there isn’t much laughter involved in the process.

Pappas will be closed beginning on January 24 and reopening at 7 p.m. on January 25.

For those wishing to try the new fare and ambiance, reservations for the grand re-opening can be made by calling 707.745.0314.

We are so happy for you Mike! Stan is smiling! Love your food, the last meeting Bob had there for the Benicia Golf Association, I asked him to bring an order of biscuits and gravy home, yumm. We wish you the best and can't wait to see it, but please don't change your food. Bob and Joan Ross

Bruce, It would be unkind for me to say. But, I could only do my best to assume that you agree?

I can tell you that I appreciate one of the Sushi places, one of the Thai places, and one of the Mexican places. I can hint you to the Mexican choice. It has spark plugs.

Can't wait to see the new changes! This is great exposure for Pappas and for Benicia. There will be recognition on the show and in the newspapers and hopefully bring more customers to Mike. He has worked hard in his restaurant for many years and we wish him luck! Bev and Jim Phelan

Since when is a national chain store a "local business"?

My god that place needs a "makeover." We're relatively new to Benicia and have been systematically trying out all of the local restaurants to establish our "favorites list." We tried Pappas for dinner and knew there was a problem when we walked in during what should've been the dinner rush and the joint was virtually empty. We soon found out why. Good luck to them and their consultant.

Just keep the fish and chips, Mike! That's all I ask. Just keep the fish and chips! Oh, and the home fries ... and the bacon .... and the grilled cheese sandwiches .... :-)

The last thing they need is to listen to the requests of their regulars - that's what got them in the rut they're in. They need to learn to appeal to a much wider audience and figure out what kind of restaurant they want to be. I'll bet anyone a hundred dollars Robert Irvine will make them either ditch the fish and chips, the french dip, etc., and go with more interesting Greek cuisine, or lose the Greek trappings altogether and just become an American diner. I hope they become a real Greek restaurant, it's pretty easy to find burgers and fries.

Indeed. When we decided to try the place for the first time a few weeks ago, we thought it was a Greek-style restaurant. Our immediate reaction to the menu was that it was an odd combination of all kinds of different cuisine which, inexplicably for the Bay Area, didn't include any vegetarian alternatives (if you're gonna have an "eclectic" menu, you gotta include choices for vegetarians). We ended up having the broiled fish, which was served just swimming in WAYYY too much oil. Virtually inedible. We did notice that the breakfast menu showed more promise and I have noticed a lot of cars in their lot during breakfast hours. I will say that the staff seemed really nice and responsive. With the right kind of advice / consultant, the place will probably turn out just fine

My wife and I have been to Pappa's once, also expecting Greek food. We never went back. Unless of course you count their stand at the farmers market. For me street food always seems to have more of an appeal in this town. Quite the opposite though for most of the established eateries.

Will he make them choose between Greek/Mediterranean or Diner style? Either way someone won't like it!

I am pappa's daughter-in-law's mom from Michigan. My son and I flew in yesterday to join in all the excitement and we can't wait until the big opening on Wed. nite. So far it has been a whirlwind of hustle and bustle and excitement. I hope they keep their delicious Greek entries and of course their breakfasts are fantastic.

Krystle: Girl, you are everywhere in Benicia! You should move here. I am a fan of Pappas for breakfast too. Never went for lunch or dinner, but I hope they continue the great, inexpensive breakfast! V. Fontaine

This has nothing to do with the story on Pappas. This comment section is not the appropriate place to advertise.

We eat there every Thursday with my elderly parents. They have great soup! And we like all the employees. They are wonderful!

I received the following message today via email: I tried to phone Pappas with no luck. They didn't answer. Can you and will you please deliver a message for me? Please tell Robert Irvine to don't mess with Pappas fish and chips, cole slaw, and their french dip sandwich. All of these are AWESOME. I live 25 miles away, BUT, on most Fridays I make my way to Pappas for my fix of fish and chips which is their Friday special. My son always alternates with fish and chips or the french dip sandwich. OMG, my mouth is watering, just thinking about it. Bottom line: " If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Thank you. Pat

When will the episode air?
Ola Peters January 25, 2012 at 06:06 PM
His feta cheese is great. I didn't know that Greek food had any real vegetarian options. I can't wait to see it and I will be there tonight!
JB Davis (Editor) January 26, 2012 at 08:22 AM
I'm told by the producers the show will air in March or April.
