Industrial Park Shopping: The Dailey Method Exercise Studio

Studio specializes in safe method for a longer, leaner more fit body.

Patch periodically interviews businesses in the industrial park. Patch interviewed Angie D’Onofrio, co-owner of The Dailey Method Studio located in the Historic Benicia Arsenal. D’Onofrio tells us about the unique Dailey exercise method and the services provided at the fully remodeled 2000-square-foot industrial modern studio.

How long has Studio been in the Historic Benicia Arsenal?
We’ve been open a year on November 22.

The Dailey Method, developed by Jill Dailey McIntosh of San Francisco, is a unique combination of ballet barre work, orthopedic conditioning, core work and stretching exercises. The one-hour challenging class lengthens, stretches and tones the entire body. The exercises are very effective and very safe. We offer both Basics and Mixed classes.  The schedule and new client specials are online.  We also offer locker facilities, retail, and fully staffed free childcare.

What inspired you to get into this business?
I had two herniated discs in my back and was very close to surgery. I decided to do some acupuncture as a last resort before surgery. That got me on the road to being able to walk again and I was able to move around. After four or five months I started to take this class, so its amazing what this class does to get your core strengthened.  It also focuses on developing your posture in an open position and that helps with lengthening the spine so we do a lot of exercises to support and lengthen the spine.

It took about six months before I noticed I had no more pain. This particular class is orthopedically based so it has that rehabilitative quality. For example, we have a lot of people who have injured their knees. They notice the muscles that support the knee get stronger.

You hail from Lafayette. What inspired you to open the studio in Benicia?
I was taking the class in Lafayette and began working at the studio. I trained and taught the class for a year. I had students from Benicia and Vallejo who were making the long commute to Lafayette who said, “Oh, you have to come here. It is a great little community.” And so we decided to open the studio.

What are the benefits of your Industrial Park location?
We love that it’s unique and the space is fabulous here.  We enjoy being a part of the artist community. Both things resonate for us.  It is kind of remote, and some people have to seek us out.

How do you get the word out that you are in the Industrial Park?
Almost every studio grows by word of mouth. We were featured in the June/July issue of Solano Fit Magazine and we have done advertising in the local paper. We do both online and email advertising. We have done handouts at the
