Sprouts and Shutters: Hair Salon For Men and a Rumor of a National Chain

This week we feature a new business moving into Southampton Center.

Sprout:  Opening soon at the Southampton Shopping Center is SportClips, a hair salon catering to men and boys.  According to the SportClips website, the store will have the feel of an old fashioned barber shop complete with television at each station so a guy can get his hair cut without missing any of the game.

Rumored Sprout:  While reporting this story Benicia Patch heard that Weingarten Realty, the company that owns the Southampton Shopping Center, is near completing a deal with a national discount store chain that will take the four empty spaces next to US Bank in the Southampton Shopping Center.

City Manager Brad Kilger was not aware that Weingarten might be negotiating with the discount store chain. “I have no comment,” said Kilger.  “I haven’t had a chance to think about it.  We’ll give Weingarten a call to confirm this rumor.”

Weingarten representative Carrie Murray said she would have to talk to the leasing agent before she could comment on whether a national discount store chain was negotiating to move into the Southampton Shopping Center.

A Walgreen's in there would be GREAT. Somehow I think that Raley's would fight that one pretty hard.

I don't know about a Walgreens. I'm told Raley's has an agreement that no other grocery stores can go in so no Trader Joe's or similar markets. I just wish Weingarten would get back to me and either confirm or deny what I've heard from one source.

JB when they say discount store chain I think of National Clothing Stores like over in Vallejo.
Robert Livesay October 31, 2012 at 02:00 pm
It also could be one of those Dollar Stores or that type. Who knows.
Ari Soglin October 31, 2012 at 02:01 pm
I think that's a good guess, Bob. Dollar Tree? http://www.dollartreeinfo.com/real-estate/

Some of the dollar tree stores and 99 cents stores sell groceries including fruits, vegetables, milk, etc. Would the Raley's contract prohibit that?
JB Davis (Editor) November 1, 2012 at 12:46 am
That would be a negotiated item between the new tenant and Weingarten. I haven't seen the Raley's lease agreement so I don't know the specifics but I've been told by folks at City Hall that there is some sort of non-competition clause that keeps stores like Trader Joe's from being considered for the Southampton Shopping Center.

Trader Joe's would not even think of coming to Benicia. The Raley's center is the type of center that is usally anchored by a major grocery store and a chain drug store. Then comes bank, fast food, coffee house, cleaners and you are seeing cig and check cashing stores in this type of center recently. Then it is filled out with in some cases take out food and other lower priced stores. You will not see any high end stores and in most cases soft line stores. Most stores on frst street would go broke at once if in the Raley's center, there are exceptions. Quick easy in and out is how those centers operate. That is why I am sticking with the Dollar Store theme. Perfect fit. Remember in many cases super markets already have prescription service, banking, cleaners and other services My next option would be a chain drug store. . We shall see.

When I lived in Toluca Lake in the late 80's and early 90's I used to go to a barber shop in North Hollywood. There were two gentlemen who, I believe, co-owned the place. There was always a game playing on this big old console tv, lots of magazines to read and usually four or five older men hanging out talking about current events, sports, what was going on around town and politics. A shave and a haircut were about 8 bucks and that included the tip. That was a great place to get a haircut.

Most men do not even go to barber shops any more. They go to Hair Salons. There are still a few around. I can not remember the last time I went to a barber shop.

My husband loves going to the new barbershop on first street. And he usually has to call in advance for an appointment. The guy is always booked. So I guess there are guys that still go to barber shops. we should all support our small businesses in Benicia. That's why we love living here.

Good to see the artists and activists benefiting from the largesse and joining hands with ValeroRead More Corp., which has contributed huge amounts of money to fight anti-pollution propositions and paid millions in polluter fines during the past few years. Valero is #28 on Political Economy Research Institute's list of 100 (out of tens of thousands) Worst Greenhouse Polluters, not quite as bad as Koch Industries Inc (Koch Brothers) at #27 but much worse than Occidental petroleum Corp (81), Du Pont (70) Dow Chemical Co (44) and 68 others on the Top 100 list.
