Benicia's West Side Won't Have Adobe Lights, Again

The cost of the lighting would force Adobe to cut other programs.

The holiday season will be a little dimmer on the west end of town.  For the second year in a row a lack of funds will force to forgo its holiday lighting extravaganza.

Adobe is a live-in work program for men with drug or alcohol problems.

Because of a low number of residents and the high cost of putting up the lights and decoration the resources aren’t there for the decorations and the other holiday programs Adobe participates in.  Between the electric bill and the decorations , money that Adobe feels is better spent helping those in need.

Executive Director Pat Purvis says the holiday meal program is still going forward.  “We deliver meals to seniors on Thanksgiving and Christmas,” said Purvis. “We do all the cooking and preparation.”

After the meals are cooked they put in containers that are dropped off to people’s homes.

“We deliver a main course and side dishes like potatoes and yams and dessert,” said Purvis at the Adobe Thrift Store on Wednesday.

Adobe also delivers holiday gift baskets.

“For a lot of people the holiday season can be not so great,” said Purvis.  “Especially for some of the senior citizens who have lost loved ones over the years.”

“It’s really great to see their faces light up when we bring the dinners,” he said.
