Vote By Mail Numbers are Big
North county returns show about 87 percent of ballots cast were vote by mail. That could mean a fundamental change in the way campaigns are run in the future.
While awaiting the results for the Bencia races I started looking at the north county numbers and noticed that about 87 percent of the ballots cast were vote by mail ballots. If those numbers hold it signals a fundamental change in the way campaigns will be run in the future.
The next election will have candidates beginning GOTV 30 days out and voter preference canvassing will start in June. If Mayor Paterson pulls out the victory tonight it will be in part because she was out walking precincts talking to voters and cementing her base before her opponent had even announced he was going to run.
It will also be a nod to her GOTV effort that left no identified suporter uncalled. It was an old school way of running the campaign but it may prove to be the difference, especially if the numbers stay close.

It also means endorsements need to come in sooner and fund raising needs to start sooner too.
