Poor Pride: The Mini-Break-Holiday

How to turn road trips into quick vacations.

In the days of disposable income, a vacation meant getting on a plane, a stamp in your passport and a serious sunburn. The destination itself was the whole reason for going on holiday. I have to wonder though, if a week of bell boys, cruise directors and souvenir shopping is worth the thousands of dollars spent.

In this desolate desert of the recession, it’s hard to even think about taking a vacation. The good news is, you don’t have to let this dry season discourage you. I’ve found that I can turn almost any road trip into a mini-break-holiday

With the rising price of gas, I try to mix business with pleasure every time I cross the bridge. Sharing a cup of coffee, a beer or a bitchin’ burrito with an old friend can replenish your soul.

When I have business further out of town, I plan ahead by making plans to see friends who live in the area, or along the way. If time allows and if I’m invited, I spend the night to allow more time with friends. Pajama parties are fun at any age. Even one night away from home can be good for your perspective and spending time with pals is always a good thing.

I am as broke as everyone else so I can’t afford to take my hosts to a fancy dinner, but I still do my best to be a gracious guest. I hate arriving empty handed so I bring adult beverages, indulgent cheeses, snacks, incense and fun activities like Tarot cards or games. If I have the time and funds, I hit the grocery store for dinner or breakfast fixins. It’s not a bad idea to have a cooler-bag in your car so you can arrive with fresh ice and cold beer, it’s way cheaper than the pub.

If your friends do invite you to stay, It’s always nice to travel with your own bedding especially if you’re on the couch. I travel with a sleeping bag and my favorite pillow so my hosts don’t have to scramble to accommodate me. Plan ahead by bringing your toiletries so you don’t have to hit the drug store while on the road.

Before heading out on your trip, fuel up with affordable gas, check your tire pressure and oil level to avoid additional expenses. Clean the trash out of your car, bring a car trash bag and load up on your favorite music. Stock your car gum, snacks, a gallon of water and beverages so you don’t fall victim to gas station mini-marts and fast food. Your cooler-bag will easily keep your drinks and food cold on your drive.

If you travel with your own water bottle and travel coffee mug, your hosts will happily refill them so you don’t have to buy that $4 Venti Latte on the way home. On your way out, ask your hosts where the best price on gas is instead of paying top dollar at freeway stations.

It’s amazing what a mini-break can do, a change of scenery can actually change your perspective on your every day life. After your travels, you’ll appreciate being home. Best of all, micro-holidays give me the opportunity to catch up, reconnect and spend quality time with old friends that I rarely get a chance to see.

Likewise, I always invite friends to visit me when in the area. Having house guests can be just as fun, it’s like having your own little staycation. Don’t feel like you have to have a Martha Stewart guest room to have friends over, most are fine with a comfy couch. Your guests will appreciate the value of good hospitality and good company.
