Falling Off The Cliff....Or Not

And Things That Are Getting Fixed and Others That Need It

I’ve feared going over a cliff. I suppose most of us have. As a kid, I remember dreaming about standing on the edge of some abyss or being on the school bus in my pajamas—long before wearing pjs to school was occasionally okay. Maybe I’ll have to take this up with that dreamy lady at the Benicia Herald, Carolyn Plath, who analyzes these nocturnal trips.

When I hiked the Grand Canyon the first time, people seemed to think it was really dangerous, that one slip of a foot and I might plunge thousands of feet to certain death or so much pain that I’d wish I were dead. Not really true. There are many ways to get injured hiking there and other places, tripping, falling, dehydration, getting lost, but falling a great distance isn’t likely, as far as I could tell.

Which brings me to the other kind of cliff we’re hearing too much about: the financial one. A fiscal cliff is a little different. I guess my wallet goes over the edge.  I stay intact on top, but I'm missing the currency and credit cards that make my life so much more livable than it is without them.

Not everyone is in agreement about how bad this fall would be. Read Why Washington’s “Fiscal Cliff” is a Myth . Read others who differ with the standard scare talk we’re all hearing on the media by following this link.

Military West and the surrounding streets are getting a major overhaul between East and West Second Street. They’ve been at it for a while now, steering us one way and another around the construction.

Someone at coffee pointed out that the corner of N and East 5th Street is an eyesore. The dilapidated building with an ugly fence around it, right across from the Holiday Inn, is seen by all those coming into town at Fifth Street. Can anything be done about this? (See pictures). The fence looks like the one around part of the Commandant’s Quarters, a very under-used asset

My granddaughter, who was born at Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley, recently turned fifteen, and as that is the legal age in Colorado for her to get a learner’s permit, she went to the DMV with her original birth certificate in hand. She was turned down, as the certificate was issued by the City of Berkeley and not the State of California. This wasn’t a slap against Berkeley apparently, as officials told her certificates produced by cities are more easily copied by those in the business of producing illegal documents. A passport was found at home which was deemed acceptable, although (of course) it had been obtained with the Berkeley birth certificate.

Lois just what was your article about? I am not sure.
Lois Requist November 14, 2012 at 02:50 pm
An apt question, Bob. It wanders a bit. Someone asked me once if it was "like Seinfeld," about nothing. Though Seinfeld was, on the surface, about nothing, it eventually touched on everything that's part of modern culture.
Robert Livesay November 14, 2012 at 03:31 pm
Well just what is it about? Nothing?
John Headley November 15, 2012 at 02:09 am
Lois, I found it a joy to read. Unlike some of the redundant comments made by the few who litter this website. Not to mention an occasional smile I get as well. Keep writing and we'll keep reading.

Surround and protect your own. Sounds to me that something like that just happened with John. I do agree with the word occasional.
Lois Requist November 15, 2012 at 02:34 pm
Thanks, John. It wasn't a hard hitting column. Wasn't meant to be. Columns most fun to write often ramble a bit. The true story, Bob, I don't want to write something every week that gives you an opportunity to slam back about how wrong I am. But I'm sure your creative mind will find something you can take aim at!
Robert Livesay November 15, 2012 at 03:32 pm
Oh how sensitive can we be. You are right I do have a very creative mind. A column with meaning gets my attention. Ones that ramble and have no point do get my attention. Columns are not meant to put folks to sleep. I hope it is meant to get creative minds such as mine paying attention. Sorry you missied it all on this article. Better luck next time.

Boobie Richardson, you are such a special piece of work. Now you are calling yourself a "Colored Boy" so can we now can refer to as "Colored Boy?" You continually place yourself in the "poor me" I am discriminated against position , yet you fail to see your role in perpetuating the commentary that follows the words of the "Black Panther Poet" If you want to be respected, quiet playing the race card, just be Bobby Richardson, nothing more nothing less, dododo dodo dododo dud.

Riley,
I'm not positive but I think he's riffing on Lou Reed.
Riley Willerson December 3, 2012 at 02:38 am
yes the song is a good one, take a walk on the wild side. point is if anyone else had used the phrase "Colored boy" in any content, the BPP would have struck with his long rant of how racism is still alive in Benicia, followed by a rambling poem

Good to see the artists and activists benefiting from the largesse and joining hands with ValeroRead More Corp., which has contributed huge amounts of money to fight anti-pollution propositions and paid millions in polluter fines during the past few years. Valero is #28 on Political Economy Research Institute's list of 100 (out of tens of thousands) Worst Greenhouse Polluters, not quite as bad as Koch Industries Inc (Koch Brothers) at #27 but much worse than Occidental petroleum Corp (81), Du Pont (70) Dow Chemical Co (44) and 68 others on the Top 100 list.
