There is a new captain in town at the Benicia Fire Department.
Engineer Jeff W. Davidson -- who had been serving as interim fire captain for eight months -- will start his first shift as a permanent captain Thursday, in Station 12.
"It's quite satisfying," Davidson told Patch in a telephone interview.
Davidson said when he was hired as a firefighter/paramedic in 1997, he said to the chief "'I want to be a captain of your fire department."'
He steps into the shoes of retiring fire Capt. Carl Lunsted, who Sunday morning was given his final ride home in a fire engine.
There will be a badge pinning ceremony in the near future.
Davidson has been a firefighter of the year and in 1990 was promoted to the position of engineer.
Over the years, Davidson received his qualification to serve as acting captain when needed and then as interim captain, according to Acting Fire Division Chief Joshua Chadwick.
He also became qualified to serve as company officer on out-of-county strike teams.
Davidson completed an A.S. degree in Fire Technology from Los Medanos College in 1989 and is still an active paramedic.
He is married, with two children.
