Benicia Firefighters Knock Down Pier Blaze

Public Works personnel assist firefighters to gain access to fire.

Firefighters received the call about the fire on Friday, Sept. 23, at approximately 9 p.m. Firefighters went to the dock located at 1279 Bayshore Rd., where they found the northwest corner of the pier on fire as well as some debris.

Firefighters fought the fire on top of the pier but noted that the underside was also on fire. A large fuel barge was moored alongside the end of the pier and was relocated out of the fire area by the tugboats Millennium Fire and Guardian.

A boat from Valero Refinery, the tugboat Millennium Fire, and fireboat 295 from East Contra Costa Fire Protection District assisted in fighting the fire. Also responding were two U.S. Coast Guard vessels.

A Benicia Public Works heavy equipment crew assisted the efforts by using jackhammers to create an opening in the top of the pier allowing firefighters to spray the burning portion on the underside of the pier.

Firefighters had the blaze under control at approximately 12:31 a.m. and were able to leave the scene at about 2:30 a.m. Damage was contained to a steel storage container known as a Conex box and an area of the pier approximately 20 feet by 110 feet.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and still under investigation.
