The California Highway Patrol is investigating two related collisions on U.S. Highway 101 in San Rafael Thursday morning.

A solo traffic accident scattered debris in three lanes of traffic, but it was cleaned up by Caltrans and representatives from Bay Alarm who were traveling through the area, CHP Officer Chris Rardin said. The road reopened at 12:34 p.m. Thursday.

A second collision occurred on the highway around noon in the traffic that was backed up from the first collision, Rardin said.

Jean Fraschina, 59, of San Rafael, was driving a 1998 Toyota Corolla between 25 and 30 mph at the Manuel T. Freitas Parkway overcrossing, Rardin said.

Fraschina didn't notice a 2004 Chrysler Crossfire driven by Rebecca Deltoro, 46, of Benicia, that had slowed down in the traffic and the front of the Toyota struck the rear of the Chrysler, Rardin said.
Fraschina suffered a compound fracture of her right leg in the collision and was unable to apply the brakes, Rardin said.

As a result, the Toyota struck the rear of the Chrysler two more times before the vehicles stopped, Rardin said.

Fraschina was taken to Marin General Hospital to be treated for her injury. Deltoro and her passenger, Daniel Nystrom, 50, of Concord, were not injured in the crash, Rardin said.
