Cops Will Team Up with Local Kids to Land the Big Fish on Sunday

New event for kids hosted by local police.

The Benicia Police Officers Association is hoping to help kids catch the big one at its first annual Youth Fishing Derby this Sunday, May 20 at the spit and fishing pier at the bottom of First Street.  There are 50 spots available for anglers who are 5-years-old to 15-years-old.

"We thought this would be another great way to connect with the youth of our community," BPOA President Kevin Rose said. "We hope this event fills up with all 50 free slots.  It will be great time for the kids."

The event is free for the kids and includes lunch and an event T-shirt.

The police will supply poles for kids who don’t own one but the young anglers are encouraged to bring their own gear if they have it.  Benicia Bait and Tackle is supplying all the bait.

Kids are encouraged to bring an appetite too because the officers will be supplying lunch as well as fishing tips.

A parent or guardian must accompany each child.

To register simply send an email to YouthFishingDerby@BeniciaPOA.com giving the name, age, shirt size and phone number of the kids who will participate. Also, the officers are asking registrants to indicate if they have their own gear.

Even if the fish aren’t biting there will be activities for the youngsters.  The Benicia Police Department will have its SWAT vehicle at the fishing derby and there will be a demonstration with a police K9 unit.
