Fire in Benicia Industrial Park Controlled Quickly

The fire damaged an industrial coffee roaster.

A fire at the , 4201 East Industrial Way in the Benicia Industrial Park did some damage to the building and may have knocked out a coffee roasting machine.

Fire fighters from were the first on the scene.  The flames were fully extinguished by 3:30 p.m. according to Division Chief Nicolas Thomas of the Benicia Fire Department.

“We were able to access the roof and we took hoses up top,” said Thomas.  “We were able to put water on the flames from up top and from the ground level."

"We flowed water at a rate of about 300 gallons per minute," said . "It was a stubborn fire.  It took all our resources."

The fire was first reported at 2:58 p.m. and fire fighters were on the scene approximately 7 minutes later.  The fire started in part of the flue assembly of one of the roasters.  A temperature sensor inside the flue alerted employees that the fire had started.

There were no injuries to either employees of Bay Area Roasting Company or to fire department personnel who responded to the fire.

Besides fire personnel, members of the Benicia Volunteer Fire Department were on the scene to support fire fighters

There was no damage to the building and company representatives told Matthews they expect to be up and running Monday.  They estimate $5,000 in lost production time.
