Fisherman Swept Out To Sea On Marin Coast From American Canyon
Silkapin Cruz Sr., of American Canyon was fishing alone near the Point Reyes Lighthouse when a wave knocked over his small ice cooler and carried it into the ocean, authorities said.
The Marin County coroner's office has identified the fisherman who died when he was swept out to sea from a beach in the Point Reyes National Seashore on Monday as 84-year-old Silkapin Cruz Sr., of American Canyon.
Cruz was fishing alone on North Beach along the 25000 block of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard near the Point Reyes Lighthouse around 12:10 p.m. when a wave knocked over his small ice cooler and carried it into the ocean, authorities said.
Cruz went into the water to get the cooler and was quickly overcome by waves, Point Reyes National Seashore spokesman John Dell'Osso said.
The National Park Service and Sonoma County sheriff's Henry-1 helicopter recovered Cruz's body.
Coroner's Lt. Keith Boyd said the death is considered an accidental drowning.
An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday.
