Zampa Grandsons Charged in Crockett Stabbing

Two grandsons of famed ironworker Alfred Zampa, for whom part of the Carquinez Bridge is named, have been arrested and charged in connection with a stabbing in Crockett last month, a Contra Costa County sheriff's spokesman said this week.

Brothers Donald Zampa, 21, and Richard Zampa, Jr., 24, were arrested Tuesday evening on suspicion of stabbing a 29-year-old man in Crockett early the morning of Oct. 26, sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said.

At about 2:10 that day, deputies responded to a report of a fight and stabbing near Second Avenue and Pomona Street and found the victim suffering from stab wounds, according to the sheriff's office.

The man was airlifted to John Muir Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries and released.

Deputies found the Zampa brothers near the scene of the stabbing on Loring Avenue and arrested Donald Zampa on suspicion of attempted murder and his brother on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, sheriff's officials said.

The two were then released from jail pending further investigation into the stabbing, and the case was forwarded to the district attorney's office.

After the brothers were arrested a second time at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, they were again booked into county jail in Martinez.

Donald Zampa is being held on $525,000 bail and Richard Zampa, Jr., is being held on $75,000 bail.

Prosecutors have charged Donald Zampa with attempted murder and making criminal threats, and Richard Zampa, Jr., with assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury, according to the district attorney's office.

Both were scheduled to appear in Contra Costa County Superior Court in Richmond to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon.

The two are the grandsons of renowned bridge worker Al Zampa, who survived a fall while working on the Golden Gate Bridge in the 1930s and for whom the western span of the Carquinez Bridge is named.
