Trestle Fire Temporarily Delays Trains

No one injured in difficult to reach fire.

A small fire broke out Sunday afternoon on a railroad trestle in Benicia near the Martinez Bridge. The fire which was first reported at approximately 4:30 July 8, was said to be visible from the Martinez Bridge, according to Benicia Fire Captain Jed Matcham.

According to a report from , firefighters had some difficulty getting onto the trestle. Once there, however, the fire was contained and cleared by 6:00 p.m. No one was injured in the fire.

 “Fires on the tracks are commonly caused by sparks from train brakes,” Matcham said.

 Train tracks near the fire closed around 5:00 p.m. Two Capital Corridor trains, one eastbound and one westbound were delayed up to an hour according to Amtrak spokesperson Christina Leeds.
