Benicia State Parks on Closure List

California Department of Parks and Recreation released its list of proposed park closures on Friday.

The Benicia Capitol State Historic Park and the Benicia State Recreation Area are both on a list of 70 state parks and recreation areas slated for closure because of the state fiscal crisis.  California Department of Parks and Recreation released the list on Friday, May  13, 2011.

In  a statement released with the closure list, Ruth Coleman, director of California State Parks, said “We regret closing any park, but with the proposed budget reductions over the next two years, we can no longer afford to operate all parks within the system.”

The parks department used three criteria when selecting the parks to close.  The first priority was to protect  significant natural and cultural resources.  The next goal was to maintain public access and revenue generation to the greatest extent possible and last they will work to protect and maintain the closed parks in order to attract potential partners who may be interested in running them.the governor in March.
