City Council Will Consider Whether to Enter Negotiations to Take Over State Parks

Report by city staff says at least $3.5 million needed to correct maintenance issues.

The Benicia City Council will consider directing staff to enter into negotiations with the State of California on three agreements that would allow the city to take over day-to-day operations of the Capitol State Historic Park and the State Recreation Area. The Benicia Capitol State Historic Park includes the Fischer-Hanlon House.

The parks are among 70 state parks slated for closure due to the state budget crisis.  Acting Economic Development Director Mario Giuliani wrote in a staff report that the city, in cooperation with community groups, has been working to develop plans to keep the parks open.

The Benicia Herald reports that staff believes it will cost the city about $25,500 to pay for utilities and upkeep of the Capitol grounds and public restrooms.
