City Manager Pay Cut on Benicia Council Agenda

The council will consider pay cuts to begin addressing a structual budget deficit estimated at $1.7 million next year.

The Benicia City Council will consider pay cuts for the city manager, city attorney and senior management employees that will equal approximately seven percent of the affected employees' salaries and benefits.  The City Council will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Benicia City Hall, 250 East L St.

The pay cuts are the first step in pay and benefit reductions for all city employees due to a looming $1.7 million deficit.  If adopted by the City Council the pay cuts would become effective July 1.  The cuts are the same as those sought by the city from all employee bargaining groups.

Employee salaries and benefits make up about 75 percent of the budget. At the May 3 City Council meeting staff was directed to exercise re-opener clauses with all the employee groups and to negotiate with those groups for salary and benefits concessions equal to 75 percent of the expected deficit, or $1.3 million.

Negotiations with the employee groups are ongoing.
