Could the Moonwalks Have Been Faked?

Since the death of Neil Armstrong, the cries have risen again, that the moonwalks were faked, similar to the way Ronald Reagan faked the Soviet Union on the Star Wars defense.

Like all conspiracy theories, this one has enough weirdness to make you raise an eyebrow. Some are raising more.  Here in Benicia we had the Howard Hughes built Glomar Explorer anchored just off our shore for many years and that is a ship shrouded in myth and fact.

Did Neil Armstrong really walk on the moon? Facebook pages are being filled with doubts, much like those who believe the Twin Towers were blown up or that Barack Obama is either not American or an alien.

Many wonder why if we did it before we aren't doing it again.

They also wonder about why the original recordings of the flight are gone. NASA erased the original moon tapes. That's right. Destroyed history but spent years looking for the originals, claiming they were tucked away in a box somewhere like the tablet in Indiana Jones.

This USA Today story documents the loss saying "NASA could put a man on the moon but didn't have the sense to keep the original video of the live TV transmission."

The original tapes have had to be refurbished from TV tapes from around the world, something that doubters cling to. Could the agency be that incompetent if it was competent enough to succeed in such a miraculous task?

This article in Gawker recounts some of the conspiracy theories and Armstrong's reaction to them.

"People love conspiracy theories, they're very attractive. But they were never a concern to me," he told an Australian TV station.

Here's an article in National Geographic that busts some of the myths.
