Planning Commission May to Build a Sign Ordinance With Help From Economic Development Board

Commissioners will consider best avenue for creating new ordinance.

The signs are everywhere.  Some are political and some are business.  They are on buildings and sidewalks and empty lots and sometimes they reside in windows and the only thing they all have in common is the City of Benicia hasn’t updated an ordinance to regulate them since 1977.

The issue seemed to come to a head last year when the Historic Preservation Review Commission ruled that a sculpture in the window of a downtown business was a sign as opposed to a work of art as the business owners claimed.

The Benicia Herald reports that City Attorney Heather McLaughlin is suggesting a team- two planning commissioners, two members of the Economic Development Board and an attorney who specializes in sign law- be formed to facilitate the sign ordinance revision.

According to a staff report, once the new ordinance is drafted it will be reviewed by the Economic Development Board and the Planning Commission.  The report doesn’t mention the Historic Preservation Review Commission getting a chance to review a draft ordinance.
