The Shrinking Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet

The once large fleet of ships is quickly shrinking due to efforts of the Obama Administration.

In October 2009 the Obama Administration announced an effort to remove obsolete ships from the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet in order to improve the surrounding environment.

Today, November 13, the USS Wabash will be the 38th ship removed from the fleet.  When the program to recycle the old ships started, the government was paying recyclers to take the ships.  Now, the government is receiving money for the old ships and using part of the proceeds to fund state maritime academies including the California Maritime Academy in Vallejo.
