Update: Recalled Beef Shipped to 6 Bay Area Stores

Thousands of pounds of recalled beef produced in Petaluma was shipped to stores in American Canyon, Berkeley, Oakland and Napa as well as a distributor in Southern California, officials said Monday.

The beef was produced by the Rancho Feeding Corporation, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture said it was produced without a full federal inspection before the animals were slaughtered. More than 41,000 pounds of meat are included in the recall.

The USDA said the Class I Recall indicates a High Health Risk, and the un-inspected meat products make them unsafe for human food, the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service said.

The Class I health hazard means there is a reasonable probability the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death, the Food and Safety Inspection Service said in the alert about the recalled beef.

The products were produced Jan. 8 and were shipped to distribution centers and retail establishments in California, six of them in the Bay Area, the USDA said. 

The retail locations are Del Monte Meat Company in both American Canyon and in Oakland, C&M Meat Company in Berkeley, La Morenita Market and Vallerga's Market, both in Napa and Prime Smoked Meats in Oakland. 

The beef products also were shipped to PBR Meats in Vernon.

The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service said the list may not include all retail locations that have received the recalled products or may include retail locations that did not actually receive the recalled product.

The recalled products include 41,683 pounds of beef carcasses, feet, oxtail, hearts, beef liver, cheeks, tripe and tongue. Beef carcasses and boxes bear the establishment number "EST.527" inside the USDA mark of inspection, and each box bears the case code number "ON904"

The problem was discovered as a result of an ongoing investigation. The Food Safety and Inspection Service said it has received no reports of illness due to consumption of the products, and anyone concerned about an illness should contact a health care provider.

No one answered the phone Monday at the Rancho Feeding Corporation located at 1522 Petaluma Blvd. N. in Petaluma.
