Volunteers Needed on Many Fronts

The call has gone out from City Hall, citizens are needed to help shape policy.

The City of Benicia currently has several openings on the City's Planning Commission, as well as a variety of other City Boards and Commissions. Anyone wishing to volunteer time, knowledge and expertise to a City Board, Committee or Commission is being asked to  file an application with the City Clerk's Office.  Applications are due on January 13, 2012.

Current openings are as follows:

Planning Commission - There are currently three full terms through January 31, 2016. This Commission enforces duties, rights and powers imposed by State law and provided by ordinance or resolution of the City Council regarding planning issues.

Economic Development Board - This Board has one unexpired term to July 31, 2014. The Board serves to identify and investigate economic development needs and opportunities in the City and annually makes recommendations to the Council regarding those needs and opportunities on both a short and long-term basis.

Board of Library Trustees - There are two openings for terms through January 31, 2015. The Board is responsible for making and enforcing rules, regulations and bylaws necessary for the administration, government and protection of the public library.

Arts and Culture Commission - Has three full two-year terms that expire on January 31, 2014. The Commission exists to ensure that arts and culture are integral to our community's quality of life, economic vitality and central identity.

Community Sustainability Commission  - Has one full two-year term through January 31, 2014. The commission educates, advocates and provides oversight for integrated solutions that seek a sustainable equilibrium for economic, ecological, and social health and well-being, both now and in the future.

Benicia Housing Authority Board of Commissioners - There are two openings for two-year terms for tenants on the commission. The Commission sets policy in regards to the affordable housing programs administered by the Housing Authority.

Soltrans Public Advisory Committee- There are currently three openings available.This advisory committee assists the Solano Transportation Authority Board of Directors and staff in the development of specific policies to improve Solano County's transit systems.

Sky Valley Open Space Committee  - There is one opening for a term to January 31, 2015. The purpose of the committee is to protect agricultural uses and the watershed north of Lake Herman Road and to pursue conservation easements and other arrangements that would help protect that watershed.

Building Board of Appeals  - There are three openings for terms that will expire in January 31, 2015. The primary duty of the Building Board of Appeals is to hear appeals regarding the Uniform Code or California Code related to building construction or safety.

Solano Transportation Authority Pedestrian Advisory Committee  - This committee has one opening available. The purpose of this committee is to review the criteria for selecting priority projects for the Solano Countywide Pedestrian Plan Update.
