Moms Talk Q&A: Should Schools Begin After Labor Day?

The annual back-to-school heat wave has hit.

Now that the kids are back in school, of course, the weather feels like summer. It's obviously a bummer for kids to be in school when it's beautiful outside, but what about parents?

Labor Day weekend is traditionally the last party of the summer.  Many big events and festivals are still scheduled for Labor Day. Do you wish you could take that last family summer vacation this week or next week? 

Like many Bay Area school districts, Benicia Unified begins the school year in mid-August although, some school districts still begin the year after Labor Day. The San Francisco district's school board voted to delay the school year to accommodate the large number of San Francisco families who attend Burning Man the week before Labor Day.

The earlier start does benefit the district, but does it serve the students and parents as well?
