Music Man is Benicia High School Spring Musical Production

Come one come all to the last theatrical performance at Benicia High this year. Music Man is a classic musical loved by all. The show runs this and next weekend.

Benicia High School drama students will create their own kind of “trouble, right here in Carquinez Straits city” with their spring play performance of Music Man.

The students are putting the own unique spin on the plot where confidence man Harold Hill arrives at staid River City intending to cheat the community with his standard scam of offering to equip and train a boy's marching band, then skip town with the money since he has no music skill. Things go awry when he falls for a librarian he tries to divert from exposing him while he inadvertently enriches the town with a love of music.

The cast of 50 includes younger actors from Robert Semple and Mary Farmar Elementary and Benicia Middle schools, said Christine Mani, the play's director who is also the Dance and Drama teacher at Benicia High.

Chris Piazza, the choral director, has developed the musical ability of the students and  Patrick Martin, Benicia High School band director, will conduct a live orchestra of 30 band members performing off stage.

“The students are enjoying comparing the past and the present through this flag-waving, feel- good, musical comedic bit of Americana, based on a hit Broadway show," said Mani.  "The play has been double cast to give a chance for the most students to develop their acting talents."
