New Principal Announced for Benicia High School

The American Canyon resident was chosen from among 30 who applied.

Damon Wright, an assistant principal at California High School in San Ramon, was named as the new principal at .  The announcement came from Assistant Superintendant Michael Gardner immediately after the board voted to accept the personnel action list at the regular meeting, Thursday, June 7.

Wright replaces who was during a closed session earlier in the evening.

Wright, a Sacramento State graduate, his wife and two elementary school aged daughters live in American Canyon.  Before becoming a school administrator Wright was a school psychologist and a counselor.

“Mr. Wright was selected from a highly competitive field,” said Gardner.  “He had some of the best references I’ve ever checked on.”

According to Gardner, 30 people applied for the position and seven were called in for interviews.  Five of those interviewed are currently principals and two including Wright are assistant principals.

Gardner said he wasn’t sure of Wright’s age but was certain he is under 40.  Wright will earn $113,000 per year as principal at Benicia High School.

“His principal told me he’s the best assistant principal he’s had in the past 12 years,” said Gardner.

According to Wright’s Linked-In profile he started working for the San Ramon Valley Unified School District in December 2003.
