Bobby, I think a couple comments were lost from this article when the site changed to the new designRead More last night. Hopefully they'll come back.

you don't hire people just because of there color RACIST...why was my prior comment edited out ? iRead More support grubbs.. she is a good person and a good coach. too many "babies" who are spoiled brats who don't get their way problably complained and what do they do,,get rid of a good coach,,now if they did that to everyone,,,the other coaches would be canned too.

I don't know Mr. Morgan, but I think Ellen Blaufarb would have been an excellent choice.
Jeremy Cantor May 2, 2013 at 04:57 pm
I know nothing about Mr. Morgan except for what I see in the preceding article. What are hisRead More qualifications to be one of the decision-makers in the area of public education?
Gary W Smith April 24, 2013 at 12:35 pm
It would be nice if this meant something; however, its fluff. NEA report has Calif #13 on list ofRead More graduate improvement, #35th in student investment; below average in graduation rates for high schools, and the largest percentage of students not completing the 9th grade. Some balanced statistics would be nice: you know that figures lie and liars figure (basic statistics course humor). So give us something that real given the dollars thrown at CA education with such a poor outcome.

Once again we see our School Board at it's best. Since when is it legal for an elected position toRead More be filled by board members? Who are they to say who will best fill our needs for representation? First they vote to extend their terms and now this? I hope the voters of this city someday will take a look at how we the people are being manipulated by the politicians. We are losing students right and left and maybe the reason for that is sitting on the throne. Maybe we can spend more than the 150k for the two policemen at two schools? Are you kidding me? $75,000 a year for a part time job is ok with you ? I am not sure what scares me more. The way money is wasted by the board members or the fact that you people don't care that it is going on.

I agree 100%. Wake up Benicia!
King of France April 23, 2013 at 02:34 pm
Don't worry Rob, everything will be handled perfectly during the "closed door meeting".Read More It's not like they can simply vote for anything they want to benefit themselves! I mean except for the free benefits package last year for a part time appointment.

All other government employees have been taking pay cuts lately. Employee costs make up 90% of theRead More entire budget for Benicia schools. For the last five years I've been hearing how they cannot afford anything and they need to increase taxes so our students don't suffer. If they can afford to raise employee salaries then I don't want to hear them crying anymore about no money for anything. The city can't afford raises for city employees. How can the school district afford raises for school employees?
Lisa Reynolds April 16, 2013 at 11:19 pm
Of course they deserve a 5% raise. Read the story if you don't agree and spend a few days in aRead More classroom.
Bob Jones April 17, 2013 at 04:16 pm
I did read the article Lisa. Please read my former statement. The question is not about whetherRead More the teachers deserve a raise. The question is whether or not the school district can afford a raise for the employees. Employee salaries are 90% of the budget. They can't afford to give anyone a raise without severely reducing what is provided to the students. The students will suffer. One of these days when the economy is better there will be money for raises, but not now. Chicago gave all their teachers raises and now they're shutting down 130 schools.

The Car Show was big fun, a real asset to Benicia's annual community events calendar. Great job,Read More guys!

With a full Moon on the 24th, the light pollution will be such that only the biggest and brightestRead More meteors will be visible.
Marnix A. van Ammers April 16, 2013 at 02:58 pm
Yeah, the video is from last year. Not sure at what stage the moon was at this time last year, butRead More I think they probably would have mentioned it if the moon was anywhere near full. I'm going to be up in the Tahoe area on the 19th & 20th. I love looking at the night sky while up there. Maybe I'll get to see a few meteors.

Liberty has blacks ? i thought the kids were african american. oh,,less than 0.001 percent ofRead More Blacks in America can trace their roots to the African continent. Now individuals from the Continent, of course they can. Libery should be closed and the students moved back into Benicia HS. they should be held accountable for their behavior and issues. They, as all students, should be held accountable for their behavior, their grades, clothing, everything. i would love to have the property, bulldoze it and buiild a multi unit apartment complex. YUP..thats what we need more section 8...definately.

For those interested in how much money goes to California education system from the CaliforniaRead More Lottery please see the following link. One needs to remember, when the lottery started and made the promise that funds would roll to education, the lottery commision could not dictate how the funds were spent. Instead of becoming "extra" money, the lottery proceeds become budgeted income. Just think where your property taxes would be without the money flowing from the lottery. http://www.calottery.com/giving-back/how-much-money
anon March 18, 2013 at 07:41 pm
PUSD received $2,591,921 from the lottery for the 4 Qtrs ending 12/31/12. Cumulative since theRead More Lotterys inception PUSD has received $41,670,136 through 12/31/12.

Joe Feltcher, as the author of this article, I invite you to attend as my guest. I will pay the $10Read More for this fundraiser on your behalf, so you will get a chance to see the depth of a good music program. Ask any Panther Band parent or band student to find me.
Babaloo March 24, 2013 at 08:57 pm
Yeah ,,,the band.....i will give them credit... people actually support something....glad to hearRead More it...i wish they would be a little more active in the community instead of just showcasing their talents for " fundraisers"....
Sheri Hoffmann March 25, 2013 at 01:21 pm
Hello Babaloo, It's great to hear from another fan of the band. I invite you to attend these freeRead More events where we are active in the community. There are many to choose from. •Holiday tree lighting; •Holiday parade; •Homecoming parade; •Car Show-April 28; •'Relay for Life' (the kids spend the entire summer fundraising for cancer research & treatment-AND perform for the community at the event); •Music in our Schools (the band helps to promote music among youth in our community); •Trytunes-June 1 (the band connects with children & adults from all over Solano County for the chance to experience music); •all football games: you pay to support the team but the band plays for free; •our four concerts during the year; •We participated in the ‘Welcome Home' parade for the return of our National Guard 749th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, and 'Cara’s Cure' in August, where alumni students organized a fundraising concert for an ’09 student who was fighting cancer. The rest of the year is dedicated to performance seasons, and raising money to keep this program going. Our only sources of funding (besides the district paid salary of the Music Director) are our families and the generous community working together. Many band students are members of the Key Club, a community organization, which is somehow fit into a very ambitious and year-round band schedule. Hope you can make some of these many community events!

There are those that are so concerned about reproductive rights that they'd rather that a mentallyRead More retarded person be raped than have the family of the same person have any input as to who and how a person with the mental IQ of a 5 year old spends their time or is protected. Yes, indeed, it is very very sad.

some of the Republican Leaders should get a hold of this story. It contradicts some of theirRead More "theories" on rape and the abiltiy for the female to "reject rape sperm, not allowing the female to become pregnant"!
Karen LaRiviere March 9, 2013 at 03:38 pm
Excellent points, however this whole thread got hijacked by one word. The purpose of the initialRead More comment was to ask how we could be laying off teachers because of declining enrollment when the numbers at the high school have either stayed the same or increased over the last few years when they were projected to decrease considerably.
Robert Livesay March 9, 2013 at 04:09 pm
True Karen you did say might. But at the same time it was where you were going with it. You neverRead More mentioned any other reason that might cause test scores to go down. It was the intent. One could assume that the transfers was the reason. It was the only reason you gave. That is why I said what I said. That is why I used the word sounds. As you can see some of the posters are already pointing fingers to Vallejo. I never said any city but most assumed that was the direction. Right or wrong that is what most I assume might be thinking. That very well might not have been your intention. But everyone that sees crime immediately points to Vallejo. You see it all the time on the Patch. I would never say another city unless it was reported as so. So the intent points in one direction...

..."Not just locks... barbed wire for the fences and guardhouses at the parking lot exits whichRead More will probably be staffed..." Were we talking about the High School, or a Prison? I'm confused. I'm sure that EVERYONE involved with the decision, had an open campus, while in H.S. And none of them, chose to remain on campus- for every lunch, while attending school. So, how many additional cafeteria's are going to be built? Because everyone remembers that the Jocks were never hanging out anywhere near the Gear-heads who were no where near the Nerds. So at least 2 additional inside area's available to consume food are needed. (but should be more like 1 additional full-cafeteria, and 4+ inside areas, to consume food) And by treating the students like prisoners, I predict that they will begin to act more like prisoners. There will be a huge increase in altercations, between students. Along with declining test scores, and higher absence rates. Even today, High School students have no idea, of how to act in the real world - because they are becoming increasingly isolated from being personally responsible for anything. It used to be the kids responsibility to get to the bus stop on-time. Before and after school. Not anymore. If you were getting thirsty, you had to plan a pass by a working water faucet - BETWEEN CLASSES. Somehow, it became a constitutional right, that kids may bring drinks into the classrooms, and consume them during class? MORE LATER

the best money every spent was in deciding to protect our children by closing campus at lunch ...Read More should have been accomplished years ago and will most likely save many kids lives!

I've been in town and went to school in Benicia, back when we were still the Boonies and each of usRead More knew were everyone lived, in town I might add. And even then there were plenty of problems both on and off campus. When it comes to finding trouble, Benicia's teens and tweenies are more than capable of holding their own. Kids need boundaries and there isn't anyone better to do the job than BPD. Glad to hear that BUSD is stepping up and helping BPD out.
Jay P March 6, 2013 at 03:26 am
Just think of all the money the city could pull in from ticket fines levied against the parents ofRead More Matthew Turner students that can't read (Right Turn Only means no left turn) and who park in the middle of a cross walk to unload their children. I guess the sense of entitlement allows them to behave this way......... because it's better in Benicia.
BHS student February 27, 2013 at 04:06 pm
Good job Karen!! It's true students drive to wingstop, in and out, and Panda Express. Most studentsRead More actual go to McDonalds or Burger King which aren't mom and pop shops and aren't going to go out of business because of $50 worth of lost revenue. So your argument is invalid and this is coming from a high school student who goes off to lunch. If I couldn't I would adjust. It's not a matter of life or death.
Babaloo February 27, 2013 at 07:08 pm
What is a Benicia HS student doing on their " phone" at 1106 am . Should they not be inRead More class ? Or are they in violation of another school regulation ? First of all I have not seen any reports of " drug use , dealing, etc". If the kids are dealing drugs call the Police. File charges and bring them to the judge and jury. The fact remains this is wrong . The school should not be " locked up" .. That's it . That's all.

I see I have no response. And I'll bet the majority of people would respond "ofRead More course"..... Sorry folks, to the first airport in Oregon ( Medford,35 miles over the Northern border) , and flight time to San Diego (Southern border) from SF are nearly identical. WTH! Congratulations Bay Area...you are in Central California....Teachers need to teach and be allowed to do so.

Local governmental should do all they can to save money. After all a school district savings ofRead More $50,000 could be better spent on educational rather than an election.

What is wrong with you believers? Who said we are definitely going to save any money by changing ourRead More voting years?Nobody knows this to be true! Does anyone else want to try and get another free year added to their term? This is just another political scam to spend money with a maybe we will save some. Do not believe it. I remember the varsity had to play a playoff game at the middle school in 1999, and lost in the lastRead More minute. Don't remember the reason behind it though.
Babaloo February 18, 2013 at 08:21 pm
Ok foolishness. First of all the financial ramifications of changing the dance would be "tooRead More much to overcome". You are going to tell a bunch of teenage girls who just had their make up done, hair and Nails that the dance that they were looking forward to would be cancelled postponed due to a " basketball game " ? Really . You obvioy don't have a daughter . Plus wait till your wife chimes in. The basketball season will survive another day . Enjoy the extra practice time. You will need it. Plus do you really have that many fans ? Besides the parents ? Your not that good to be compared to Baseball ( even though they had a huge let down in the playoffs because they don't play anybody during the season and coast ) . Or Foitball . Don't get me started on that one . So get a few winning seasons and stop whining. Your not the best of the best, your from or near Benicia .
Babaloo February 19, 2013 at 01:31 am
So they won.. Packed house .. So I guess the dance had nothing to do with it huh ,,,

Babaloo February 11, 2013 at 01:21 am
it was clear. maybe a half time show would be more appropriate instead of just playing. yesRead More entertain the "fans"... put some effort into it. instead of taking up the good seat..all painted nice and pretty segregating themselves from the rest of the fans. maybe there should be a special area in the end zone where the band can play. or maybe on the end there where you come in the bleachers there would be fabulous for the band,,the accoustics there,,greeting everyone when they come in so the sweet sounds ...think of it,,it would be fabulous...really ought to think about this one...or maybe accross the field on the other sie,,,that would be even better...there to entertain the opposing teams fans...oh,,,imagine the opportunities...
DJE February 20, 2013 at 03:40 pm
Wow, Babaloo......nice to see the support (or lack of) you have for our high school music programs.Read More The band kids work harder than just about any other organization on that campus. The 'good seats' are a gesture the football staff and athletic director give the band for giving up their time and energy to cheer on the team. In fact on most Friday nights they are the last to leave the game (wim or lose) and usually have a competition early on Saturday morning. So I think it is the least they deserve. They also need to be in a stable section of the stands due to the very expensive instruments they work with. They need the ability to see what is going on during the game to know which music to play when. As a parent of a football player, I think the games are much better when the band is there. They are the MOST spirited part of our game. And I am sure if you ask ANY of the football players, they would all say the same thing. It pumps them up! The band gets NOTHING in exchange for playing. And on a side note, you should know that our marching band was undefeated for 2 full seasons! They are respected throughout the music community and bring much honor and recognition to our High School. They have marched in the NYC St Patrick's Day Parade, Walt Disney World and the Rose Parade. All of which have to be auditioned for. I personally am very proud of our band kids and what they do for our community!

It's interesting how easy it is to form opinions, even when you don't have the facts. I guess theRead More old saying is true... "Opinions are like elbows... Everyone's got one." Let's ask a question: What if by chance (fact) this coach was not fired because of this incident? What if this incident was the preverbal "straw which broke the camels back?" Hmmmm. Here are some facts: 1. The parents were about to go the principle with a petition to fire him for his "Lack of Coaching and respect for the players". 2. In 5 months the coach completely alienated himself from the faculty. 3. The main reason why those players were unsupervised, was because the coach fired ALL of the JV coaches. Instead of the 11 or so coaches, for the total program, which had been on staff, there were only 5. Oh, by the way, the reason why they were fired... There played for the previous coach. 4. The coach NEVER took responsibility for his actions... He openly blamed and embarrassed the players when they lost; he blamed the principle and everyone else because he lost his job. 5. It's been said that none of the present coaches were coming back if he was to remain the HC. For a short list, it is clear, that while this was a horrible event, the dismissal of this coach was far beyond this event.
