It’s So Easy Being Green

Plant today for a greener tomorrow.

Oh boy, are we ever in for nice weather. The sun has come out to play and the flowers are beginning to grace our hillsides.  I feel so lucky to look out on the strait and see the water and green hills every day. The word "paradise" comes to mind frequently.

Q:  Hey, I saw you with a bunch of people working on the hill above Military at Benicia High School. What’s up?

A:  That was the Benicia Tree Foundation you saw out there.  We received a grant from California ReLeaf to in the areas to the south and west of the baseball fields.  Remember where the Arizona cypress were? The trees will be deodar cedar, incense cedar and coast live oak. This was just the first of three scheduled work dates. We will be out again in March and April.

The Benicia Tree Foundation is a newly formed nonprofit that focuses on tree planting and education in the City of Benicia. Plans are to hold many planting projects.  If you would like to be on their e-mail list, contact the foundation.

The foundation would love to work with home owners to plant trees. We are looking for people who would like to plant the right tree in the right place on their property. We can get trees at a reasonable price and help you assess the water and care for the species you choose. Contact them if you are interested in learning more.

The Jepson Chapter of the California Native Plant Society has some great opportunities to get out and plant, too. It has a lovely botanic garden at the Benicia State Recreation Area. Members putter there each Saturday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.  For more information, contact Dan Jensen

OK, enough!  I am going to get outside while the sun is still shining and putter in the garden.
