Open Studios Preview Exhibition Opens

Don't miss the chance to meet the artists in your own back yard.

The sponsored annual citywide weekend is less than two weeks away. This year, nearly 70 artists and artisans will open their private studios and venues to exhibit their work April 30 and May 1. Expect to meet painters, print-makers, sculptors, photographers, wood-turners, illustrators, fiber artists, metal-smiths, ceramicists, glass artists and jewelry designers.

Many studios are live-work spaces, so this is one of only two annual opportunities to visit them. event is in December. Many artists are shy creatures and this is a rare chance to meet them in their natural habitat.

In the historic Arsenal district, artists have converted warehouse spaces into functional studios and homes. Residents have not let the concrete jungle environment stop them from creating cozy living spaces. You'll see urban gardens built from reclaimed materials and garnished with sculpture and unique artwork.

Look for William Rose's The Extinguished Mr. Tiki, a metalwork piece crafted out of a fire extinguisher. Brad Adams' cork oak wood bowl is stunning. Tuba Maestro, a black and white photo by Michael Van Auken, is clever and quirky. The watercolor by Jack Mills is bold and fresh.

To preview the show, visit the gallery Thursday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Just remember that most studios are open to the public only during Open Studios weekend, so respect the privacy of Arsenal residents when visiting the gallery.
