Dates Set for Last Composting Until Spring

The classes will be taught by a master gardener at the downtown community garden.

According to the EPA, Americans throw out 25% of the food we prepare and our country spends approximately $1 billion disposing of it. Composting your food waste, green waste, and paper diverts it from landfills and makes your plants happy.

To make the task easier, Allied Waste, the city’s garbage collection company, is sponsoring classes on composting.  The next composting class is Saturday, August 25th at 9AM at the Avant Garden, at First and D Street in downtown Benicia.  This class is free and is presented in cooperation with Benicia Community Gardens.

Soilsaver composting bins will be sold at 50% off at the class.  Valcore's Master Gardner, Jane Bogner will lead the class through a "how to" session on composting, from wilted lettuce to worms. Bogner teaches the correct levels of carbon or brown material versus nitrogen or green levels with some surprising ingrediants to add to the bin.

"I have seen Jane teach quite a few times and I always learn something new," said Marie Knutson, Allied Waste Services. She is so enthusiastic and knowlegable that now I have two composters going. It's fun."

On Thursday, Sept. 27th, the last composting class of the year will commence at the Avant garden at 5 p.m.
