Artist Profile: Jennifer Negrete

Home improvement project ignites artist's talent.

Jennifer Negrete's artistic talent blossomed when she attended Pasadena Junior High and took a class that focused on the wilderness and art. Although she didn't pursue art as an adult, her appreciation for art and color remained.

Negrete began painting in 2010. Her husband was renovating their garage and had an 8' by 3' piece of plywood leftover. Negrete's six year old son wanted to paint on the wood so she joined him. What started out as a fun project uncovered Negrete's hidden talent.

The giant landscape was meant to decorate the garage, but friends kept asking “Where did you get that?” A decorator friend commissioned a painting from Negrete for a client's home. Just like that, she was a working artist. She is however, keeping her law office job.

Taking inspiration from nature, Negrete paints stylized landscapes and nature themed works in oil paints and acrylics. She still paints large scale and admits to being intimidated by small canvases. “No one can destroy a small canvas like I can.” She is much more comfortable with bold colors on large canvases, up to 4' by 3'.
