The Great Escape: Dive In

Skydive indoors — without the plane or the danger

If you have been working hard lately, trying to entertain bored kids, and wearing yourself to a frazzle, how can you unwind? Is a bubble bath too sedate an idea for you?

If getting your adrenaline pumping is your favorite way to escape, it may be time to spend an afternoon in a vertical wind tunnel.

Indoor skydiving takes all the danger out of jumping out of a plane and leaves just the fun of free-falling, and often for a lot longer than the 45 seconds skydivers get. The experience takes about two hours, from registering and attending a short instructional class to gearing up (jump suit, goggles, ear plugs and more) and jumping in the chamber.

Although the price was not listed on IFly’s website, most centers charge by the hour, with an average cost of $75 for a first flight. If you really get the hang of vertical wind tunneling, second, third, and subsequent flights run much cheaper.

Anyone over the age of 3 is old enough to fly, and some of the wind tunnels offer special group rates and packages, with photos and DVDs of your flight.

Strap on the goggles and do some flying.
